looky what I got today

I love it when this happens... a bunch of fabrics I ordered all arrived at the same time. First up is the new "Swell" charm pack by Urban Chiks for Moda Fabrics: I love all the muted blues and greens in stripes, polka dots, and florals, and the red gives it a fun punch.

Then more fun with dots with a charm pack of Aunt Grace Polka Dots in vintage reproduction prints and colors. And the large cherry red and white polka dot squares I picked up at Frog Song... they are to die for!

Can't wait to use all these for a big shop update in January once the baby's here and I've adjusted (somewhat) to motherhood!

last night's project

A couple years ago I bought some amazing vintage Christmas embellishments, but have never used them... so yesterday I finally decided to incorporate them into some new white felt stockings.

I lifted the idea of the little florets from rikrak's fabulous and fun felt stockings, then embellished them with the vintage jingle bells. The cursive embroidery is "LaurenScript" font printed off at size 96, then traced lightly in pencil onto the felt. Finish off with a blanket stitch, and voila!

I love having stockings at Christmas... giving gifts is one of my top "love languages" and I just love the idea of shopping for and stuffing tiny little gifts in there. Rusty always gets consumables from me... which usually means chocolate in different forms!

handcrafters' holidays

Sew, Mama, Sew! is asking crafters for their favorite handmade holiday gifts, both to give and receive. Maybe go check out what other crafters are making/suggesting for gifts this season, and here are my answers to the SMS! blog questions:

Q: Do you have a favorite gift that you love to give?
A: This isn't handmade, but it's heartfelt. My mom has a beautiful collection of green depression glass that came from her mother. She's always looking for more pieces for her specific pattern, and so that means I'm always on the look-out when I'm at flea markets too. I like to get her a piece or two for her birthday or Christmas... or both!

Q: If you’re making gifts this year, what are you making?
A: At least the family/friends who read this blog won't know who's getting what... scarves, covered photo albums, ice cream cozies, stationery sets, and lined zippered clutches. The clutches I'm making using Splityarn's wristlet tutorial. I 'd be lost without it! Below is a quilted zippered wristlet I made for an Etsy customer using the tutorial.

Q:
Do you have any good stories about handcrafted gifts you’ve given or received?
A: My sister Alicia makes such beautiful cards... I have to keep every single one she ever sends me. This year she made all the invitations for my two baby showers; they were adorable and everyone commented on how cute they were! I was so grateful for the work she put into them and for making my showers so special in that way.

Q: Name one thing on your personal wish list.
A: I need a long wallet to hold everything, like this one from Bliss By Heather. That way the mommy essentials are all in one place in the diaper bag!

Q: Do you make and sell things that would make fantastic gifts?
A: I think I do! But there are only a few things left in my Etsy shop as I try to wind down in preparing for the birth of my baby (two weeks to go!). So I haven't been replenishing things right now.

super duper thanks...

...to the awesome drive-thru guy at the west-side Starbucks who gave me a FREE grande peppermint mocha because it was made by accident, when I was just buying a gift card.

And now, spreading the love, I'm giving away a whole bunch of scrap fabric and fabric samples to some Freecycle folks. If you don't know about Freecycle, then you should check it out. The aim is to keep stuff out of landfills by offering it to each other in your community... and you won't believe what people will take if it's free: cut-up magazines, a box of "miscellaneous", you name it. Someone can always use it.

The best part about cleaning out my fabric stash is the room I now have for some new finds! I've been loving some of the Scandinavian-inspired fabrics I've been seeing lately (like here, here, and here), so I was ecstatic to find some vintage prints yesterday at one of my favorite antique places.

Lovely!

consider the halls decked

This year we decided to scale back on the Christmas tree, so we bought a sapling which we'll probably give away to someone who'll plant it after the season's over (hopefully before we let it die!). That didn't stop me from loading it up with all my pink, green, and silver antique ornaments though. Claire already has her gift waiting under the tree.

"Vintage Songbird" is partially named for my favorite ornament, this little antique bird. Unfortunately he has lost his beak somewhere along the way, but I still love him.
